The Economist this week observes that the military backed interim government managed to discredit both Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and Sheikh Hasina Wajed of the Awami League by association with corrupt relatives. However, the magazine notes that neither of the Begums -- the former two Prime Ministers -- are likely to be put on trial because of their personal ties with high ranking military officials. Instead, they will either retire from politics or go in exile.

The relatively young Bangladeshi Cricket Team today beat the number one cricket team at the Super 8 game in Guyana by 67 runs. Now that they have won against two experienced and world class teams -- Indian and South African -- the team should have more confidence and hopefully will present more surprises during the Cricket World Cup 2007!
